TOMATO RING

If you are growing a tomato as part of a thriller-filler-spiller combination, the sucker-pruning, single-stake method described on this page yields the best growing results since it keeps the tomato narrow so there’s room for neighbors. However, if you are growing tomatoes as a solo act, this easy, inexpensive grow ring is an excellent way to keep your plants strong, upright, and attractive. Similar to the rings used to keep peonies from flopping over in the flower garden, this DIY version is tailor-made for tomatoes. It is unobtrusive, supportive, requires little effort from the gardener to help keep a plant tamed, and can be made to the exact diameter of a pot for a neat, trim fit.

Time: 30 minutes / Cost: $8

Size: 16" diameter, height varies with the height of the container and tomato
